Ely found his early fame on the Tarzan series, where he acted for NBC television from 1966 to 1968. Ely was also famous for doing many stunts without a body double, proving his commitment when, during the show, the actor incurred several injuries, including broken bones and attacks by animals.
Since quitting Hollywood in 2001, Ely has written and authored two mystery novels. Despite this, he made a rather short cinematic comeback in 2014 in the TV movie Expecting Amish, in which he played an Amish elder.
Interestingly, Ely’s career extended beyond his role in Tarzan. He has featured in some series like The Love Boat, Wonder Woman, and St. Elsewhere, even featuring Lynda Carter. He also hosted the Miss America pageant in the early eighties, a name he got employed to use to meet his wife Valerie. They also had three children during their marriage.
Ely was born in Texas in 1938 and was initially married to his high school sweetheart in 1959, which dissolved two years later. In his later years, he moved to Santa Barbara, California; he died a natural death in his home in Los Angeles on September 29. A week ago, a popular singer from One Direction, Liam Payne, was also found dead after falling from the Hotel Balcony in Buenos Aires.
Reflecting on her father’s legacy, said:
“Some people called my father a hero. But he was just my dad to me, and, in that capacity alone, I have found my greatest privilege.”
