The show’s director and creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, admitted that he had to lose eight-point-nine teeth due to stress during the Squid Game shooting. The outstanding dystopian drama of the year 2021 that gained immense popularity on Netflix is focused on a show where the main idea is survival battles for hundreds of millions of dollars. The second season, which is scheduled for release on December 26th, 2024, will remain even darker.

“Money” Changed His Mind About Season 2

Turning the tables gingerly, Hwang reluctantly said that, though he hesitated to make another season, the decision was motivated by his capacity to be reimbursed. As per official reports, the popularity of Squid Game is believed to have grossed over £650 million for Netflix; however, Hwang says he was paid a relatively meager amount for an artist on the show.

“Doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too,” he shared with BBC Seoul correspondent Jean Mackenzie (BBC article link).

The Global Success and New Challenges

The first season of Squid Game turned into Netflix’s biggest show to date and received positive reviews for the show’s sharp satire of greed and desperation. However, Hwang’s difficulties have increased expectations, new actors, and even a grim plot based on world topics of inequality, climate change, war, and others.

Season 2: New Games, New Factions, and Complex Character Arcs

This season brings new rules: after each game, the participants have to join one of the factions that emphasize the show’s message that the world is divided. Hwang wants to show how people can be forced to become members of a tribe and factions, as the plot of the show demonstrates.

For Hwang, Gi-hun, the winner of the previous season needs to rejoin the game to save the other contestants; thus, the show comes with “desperation and determination.” The fans will also get a glimpse of the dark history of the show’s Front Man and, more importantly, his intentions and purpose.

The Streaming Pay Dispute

A recent post by Hwang about pay has led to a discussion of unfair remuneration within South Korean entertainment, a sector that has rapidly grown but lacks viable modes of sharing revenues because of the country’s old laws surrounding copyright. Several Danish showwriters, including the author of Squid Game, Park Hae-young, have complained about platforms such as Netflix that demand creators to give out their rights. Hwang and others are demanding a change in the South Korean laws on copyright to make it possible for them to be paid fairly.

A spokesperson for Netflix responded that it provides “competitive compensation” and guarantees creators are paid fairly “regardless of the show’s success.”
