His entrepreneur company Tesla is again preparing for the big unveiling of its highly anticipated robotaxi which is to be staged later Thursday at Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, featuring the Tesla Cybercab. The event is called “We, Robot,” and Mr. Musk would like to present his ideas on how self-driving cars can not only prevent terrible accidents but also be turned into profitable taxi and Airbnb cars.

The announcement comes at a time when there is increasing doubt over Tesla’s capacity to deliver on robotaxi plans. Initially planned for August, the new setback will push back part of the project, with Musk explaining the delay by ‘last minute changes.’ Experts are demanding that the firm show real progress, with competitors such as Waymo already testing self-driving taxis on the roads.

Expectations From The Cybercab

Specific information describing the Cybercab in more detail is still scarce, but sources claim the car will have only two seats and butterfly doors. It is expected that it will depend on the combination of the cameras and the computing power, distinguishing it from Lidar technology, which the rivals use.

When it comes to the CyberTruck, Musk has suggested that Tesla could own and operate some or many of the Cybercabs and allow personal Tesla owners to use their vehicles via the Tesla network when they’re not completed with paying customers. Specific details and initiatives expected by Wedbush analysts to be presented during the event are on-spot demonstrations of the prototype, the cost per mile of the vehicle, and the announcement of the company’s plan to design a unique ride-sharing app.

The buzz in the industry and our expectations

The business circles have been waiting for Cybercab so intensely, and as Musk and these experts have said, there is a need to go beyond ideas. Jessica Caldwell from Edmunds.com said, ‘Well, the idea is that this should provide some clarification around this event.’ Many people will be disappointed if Tesla does not present a developed concept and operational details.”

Such worldwide renowned media outlets as the BBC, which Musk invited to the previous car launches, were not invited at all. However, the event will be livestreamed on X (formerly Twitter) at 19:00 Pacific Time to allow audiences from all over the world to tune in to the show whenever they want updates.

A Competitive Landscape

The robotaxi segment has huge growth potential since companies including Waymo and Uber are adding more autonomous cars. Late in 2021, Waymo expanded its already impressive fleet of robotaxis by adding the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to the mix, while Uber is partnering with the makers of the Cruise cars with an eye on improving existing delivery and ride-hailing services.

That has now shifted to an expectation that Musk will clarify the situation and, at the same time, introduce new concepts as the Cybercab approaches production in what is becoming an increasingly exciting and innovative market. The issue of regulatory issues and the highly technical issue of driverless operation was demonstrated on Thursday in a way that properly exhibits the possibility of drastic changes in the future of autonomous transport.
